FUN TIMES - Ruth Childs

21/22 Nov, Atelier de Paris / CDCN

Four performers tread invisible paths. They oscillate and tune into each other and move in a cosmos of vibrating relationships. A kind of emotional formalism serves as the basis for their movements.

With things veer, Cosima Grand continues to pursue her interest in the intertwining of humans and non-humans. Her last work Restless Beings was earthbound and inspired by microbes and bacteria. things veer now looks upward: The piece zooms out and embraces the dark, penetrating planetary systems, galactic and cosmic spheres, from external movement to movement within, from pulsation to scream.

Documentary Choerografers at work!

(If you read the following text aloud, please read it singing, rocking, shaking and/or trembling.)

They grow on a small feeling within us
they are not easy ones, but fertile ones
they have one cell or more,
they get ignored, you get bored, maybe.

Plunge into it and swim around.
Maybe take some deep breaths before.
The songs assembled here bring
together new ways of living on a planet
that has been damaged recently.

Open your pores, so long.

Simply said:
Restless Beings is a piece for 5 dancers. Together they form a rocking, trembling and shaking choir. They tell of forms of coexistence between humans and non-humans on a damaged planet.

«Hitchhiking thorugh Winterland» is a journey through inner states. In a language of reduced movement, performer Cosima Grand passes through stages ranging from joy to hopelessness and despair.
The piece is a contemporary response to Franz Schubert’s song cycle «Winterreise» («Winter Journey») and a pop music roadtrip by musician Romain Mercier. Like Schubert, Grand explores the theme of the lonesome journey.
What emerges is the fragile path of a polymorphous body that is both in unity with and in opposition to its sonic surroundings and the space it inhabits. An ambivalent trip through the conflicting area between the within and the without, the familiar and the foreign, the secret and the sinister.

«Words decompose in my mouth like mouldy mushrooms. Constantly, someone is using a gesture as a
sledge-hammer to crack a nut. Constantly, someone is taking a phrase and is hitting someone else
with it in the face, so hard that it hurts. Don’t you know what I mean? Don’t you understand? You should hold your hands over your ears, if my body is speaking to you too loudly. Stante pede I claim:
Hips don’t lie!»

Words turn into beats; normativity turns into a soundtrack. Body and language are no longer considered
as separate: Spoken language is generated in the body — and our bodies are defined by language. The piece CTRL-V (LP) reconsiders the relationship between spoken language and its physicality. With
persistent repetition, the two performers deal with the power relations between language and body.
